SUMMARY: When do we get our happy ending Scully?

**********

"When do we get our happy ending Scully?"

"What?"

"Our happy ending. When will we get it? If we even get one that is. I mean, look at all we've been through, all we've lost. Our sisters, my parents...Emily. And still it keeps coming. The illnesses, the threats, the lies, the deceptions. All of it. Just when we think it can't possibly get any worse, it does. So I'm asking you Scully, after living through all of this, exactly when do we get our happy ending?"

"Mulder, you don't 'get' a happy ending. You make it. That's what we're doing right now. Look at William sleeping in there, every time he draws a breath, that's a happy ending. Every time you look at me...just like that, that's a happy ending. Frankly just the fact that we're all alive at the same time is a happy ending."

"Being alive at the same time shouldn't be our happy ending Scully. You deserve so much more than just being happy to exist."

"You take your happy endings where you can find them. Believe me, when you return, and you will return Mulder, we'll find them everywhere. You'll hold William and tell him how much you've missed him. A happy ending. We'll sit here on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and a couple of bottles of beer and watch a movie. A happy ending."

"Will this film be Steel Magnolias?"

"Yeah, the Directors Cut."

"Scully..."

"I'm kidding Mulder. I don't even think there is a Directors Cut."

"Still, it's not..."

"OK, I'll admit it may not be the kind of happy ending most people would dream of or even the kind we would have originally hoped for ourselves. Just think of it as a work in progress. It may take awhile but eventually we'll get it finished."

"You mean once we deal with the various threats of death and that pesky alien colonization thing that's looming over our heads?"

"Yeah, once we get past those it'll be smooth sailing."

"So, let me get this straight Scully, what you're saying is that if we want a happy ending we have to take them where we find them."

"Exactly."

"That does makes a kind of sense I guess."

"A kind of sense you guess? Don't deluge me with compliments Mulder. I don't think I could handle it."

"No Scully, this theory is growing on me. Finding our own happy endings. Lots of possibilities there. Lots and lots. In fact, I even know the best place to start looking.

"Oh really?"

"Oh yes."

"Where?"

"Let me show you..."
